Toyota Corolla Verso

When we bought our Toyota Corolla Verso, it was because we had been looking for trouble free motoring. The Toyota was supposedly as near as dammed the answer to our needs. A baby on the way and our requirement for easy storage, generous space and yet a vehicle small enough to park without issue. All of the above is true, except the trouble free motoring. We moved house three months after buying our Corolla Verso and moved to a nice part of the Peak District away from the 10year old Wimpy/Bloor/Barratts modern housing estate in Ilkeston for a better outlook. All well with the exception that the Corolla starts smells really foul from the engine area. We notice that the smell happens when the car is in reverse and the MMT clutch/gearbox slips or when going through slow traffic. The smell becomes unbearable and we take this 4month old car (3850 miles) back to the Toyota garage to check. We were told that 'It is probably just the clutch wearing in! They take a while sometimes'! My wife carries on driving it for a further 2000miles and reports back to Toyota that nothing has changed and the smell is unbearable. The garage duly arranges for a new clutch to be fitted and off we go again.... No more than 2 days has passed when the smell returns and we are asked to give the new clutch a few more days to bed in etc! Etc! After writing a complaint letter to the MD of Toyota garage that we purchased the car from we are asked to bring the car along to a field test in Ilkeston. We did and hey presto the car failed to smell as the inclines in Ilkeston are not sufficient to make the car struggle and the clutch slip.... However the Toyota engineer states he will report his findings and recommend that a field test at our home address should be carried out. June 27th 2006 the Toyota engineer arrives with a representative of the garage and we test our MMT 55plate Corolla Verso now with 7000 miles odd on the clock and nearly a year old and conduct the test. The car reverses up the drive and for all to smell it stinks like rotting drains and old burnt rubber... not conducive to happy motoring. The engineer states that this is definitely a clutch issue and that Toyota Europe has had problems with non-Japanese manufactured clutches. This sounds like the case here. I state that to my knowledge the clutch was replaced by the garage because of this issue and the new one now residing in my car is a Japanese made clutch.... 'The problem is that all new clutches manufactured nowadays do not contain any asbestos and therefore cant stand the high temperatures in the same fashion and start to burn, hence the awful smell.... I said well I don't really care about the problem I want it fixed and remarkably the engineer says he will make his report back to Toyota Europe and let us know..... 21st August arrives and a letter from our garage stating that 'following the report by the Toyota Field Sales manager a copy of the report was now in there possession and in light of the findings we are unable to offer any further assistance.....Assuring you of our best attention at all times..Bullshit! Here are my findings.. 1. All Car manufacturers have a policy, which ensures that under no circumstances are their vehicles at fault or defective. 2. All Car owners are poor drivers and therefore are unqualified to understand any 'issues' that may occur with a new car 3. Under no circumstances will any financial reimbursement be discussed or any car rejected or exchanged. 4. Any individual will have to take the manufacturer and there agents to court to seek satisfaction, which could take years and cost many thousands of pounds with the likely outcome being weighed heavily in the manufacturers favour Having reread the Toyota garages letter and the report, my conclusion is that Toyota Cars fitted with the MMT gearbox/clutches will always stink when they go up steep hills or in slow traffic. Furthermore they are designed to slip causing extra abrasion and wear and tear which will reduce the lifetime of the clutch/gearbox and make all MMT drivers who live in the hills or cities very unhappy with their stinking car and possible other car owners stuck in the same traffic jams. My conclusion: DO NOT BUY A TOYOTA VEHICLE and certainly do not buy a car fitted with the MMT system.. Its really **** in the hills.
