Search of purse at theater

Tonight I went to a local theater premier to see a family animated feature. We had no trouble getting into the theater but before entering the actual area where film was to be watched, we and others were stopped and told to open our purses for a search with no explanation. Since when does going to a theater in San Diego, Mira Mesa area, call for a illegal search of ones private purse. Did the men have to turn inside out their pockets or was this only done to the female audience. By the way, the people doing the search were rude and obnoxcious. No explanation was given. This was the Edwards theater off Mira Mesa Blvd.
