SBC Yellow Page Greed

I bought a small company that did not disclose their $6,000 delinquent SBC yellow Pages bill. I tried to settle this and spoke with a manager stating how the business was in sad shape but because I do a lot of business with SBC in another venture that they should settle because otherwise they will lose all my future business.” After about a month, the manager reported to me by phone that SBC has decided to write off the full amount and that all they needed was a copy of my purchase agreement for their records. I said the PA could be read that I am responsible for the bill and she responded, “it didn't matter, this was just for their files”. I sent her a fax thanking her and for their sales person to contact me. Now they are suing me for the full amount as if this conversation never took place. Don't managers of these huge companys have some duty to tell the truth and be relied upon?
