product broke after 6months

i received a magnavox mdr700 as a gift and it broke after 6months. turned it on and caput everything went black and would not go on. called customer service and they said it might be the cord. purchased the cord and now i have sound and no picture. i've spoken with other people who have the same problem and plus read reviews. something needs to be done about this.
