npower electric scare tactics

I have an electric pre paid meter to avoid debt. Yesterday a man called to reset meter after electricity price rise. He told me that I owe £999 (nine hundred and ninety nine pounds) I am a pensioner and my wife has a heart condition and this came as a great shock. When I contacted npower they said that all of the reps meters are set at this amount as a ficticious amount, but that I still owe £138. I dispute that I owe anything at all, and am contacting energy watch. I wondered if any one else has had a similar experience. Thank you
