Lack of Info on Lenders

I have been trying to get info. on real estate lenders to see if the one I have picked to fund my loan is on the up and up. I have been at this for seven hours and don't know any more than when I started. I do research on the web and think I know what I'm doing but to get lender information is like trying to find the map to the Lost Duchman Mine. God, what a protected industry! Any ideas friends?
