Homeowners Ripped off by City of Cape Coral

I have lived in Lee County Florida since 1971. When hubby & I purchased out home here in Cape Coral FL over 11 years ago we knew that sooner or later the city would be placing water & sewer lines so we asked the realtor about the costs involved. he told us back then that it would happen around the time our son would graduate high school and that it would cost us about $8000 or $9000. Our son graduated a few years ago and it looked as if the city has pushed back their plans and that we might have to wait another 10 years until last year when peoples wells started running dry (due to many homes being built in the area) and the city pushed the time table up to about 4 years. In another section of town, residents are getting assessment bills for at least $22,000 and as high as at least $40,000. I asked our mayor how the city expects working families to come up with that type of money and if it is that much now, what will it cost when they get to our area. He never answered me about cost but as for how we are supposed to pay for it? We can take out an equity loan on our home or we can finance with the city at 6% or better yet choose their 'deferral program' where you pay nothing for 20 years while interest accrues and then if you dont pay it off, they attempt to foreclose on your home. Not every one in this area is rich and retired. Those of us who lived here most of our lives and work for a living do not have that kind of money, nor can we afford $22,000 loans. Sooner or later, working class people will be forced out of the area. Buyer Beware. Your realtor does not always know what will be charged for a future project. Our city now has a spot on their website with a list of their projects and time frames but costs still cannot be estimated until they are ready for that project. The $8,000 tp $9,000 is a big difference from $$22,000 and we will surley see a bigger difference by the time they get to our section of town! To top it all off, the city has had 3 audits. The council chose the auditing firms yet have argued each and every audit as none of them have given good news about how our money has been spent.
