guitar or violin?

my parents have paid for expensive violin lessons for me for the last 12 years. i'm 18 now and want to play the guitar. my mates play and when i first picked up the guitar the hair on the back of my neck stood up. i was able to strum a few songs and the lads were impressed. i don't want to play the violin anymore but then again i don't want to upset my parents. confused?
