Autism is rapidly growing in our society and identification and intervention is key to te success of the child. It has bee our experience that Lexington 1 is not prepared to address the needs of these students as of 2006. If your child attends this district and he/she is diagnosed with Autism or PDD/NOS, please document and record any and all conversations with Staff and stay closely involved in the process. Once State and Federal funding has been extended for the education of these kids, there is little to no incentive for the District to allocate the resources for the needs of the child. It has been our experience that migrating them into an 'emotionally disturbed' setting allows them to warehouse these kids and use the funding in other areas. Hopefully by the time you read this, changes will have occured, but in case it hasn't, PLEASE do not make the same mistake that we did and allow the child to be mistreated and denied a Free Education as found by the State Department of Education and The Office Of Civil Rights. We allowed all three years of my child's middle school years to go by with no formal action being taken.
