Domestic & General

I bought a Siemens washing which came with a free 5 year guarantee. I later discovered this was underwritten by Domestic & General. Every 6 months since I get a letter from D&G inviting me to extend and annual guarantee to 5 years. Mainly this is because they have misspelled my name and so they can't tie the two guarantees together. This is the interesting bit. I thought I would ring them just to sort this out and stop these annoying erroneous reminders. I rang the Customer Service number on the original guarantee. This turned out to be the repair centre who said (rather shirtily) they were nothing to do with D&G. There was no other telephone number on the 5 year guarantee or the reminder. There was an email address and a mail address. There is no contact phone number on their website. I think this is totally unacceptable. Many people do not want to use email, especially the old or at least the technologically challenged. I would stop buying any D&G insurance but cannot because the manufacturers have outsourced their insurance to D&G and so the customer (I am sure they think punter) has no choice. I business parlance you might say they have insulated their channels from end customer influence. Actually I did email D&G, and Siemens and Dyson, who have a similar deal with D&G. Of the three only Dyson have replied, but only to deny any influence on D&G (which is of course wrong, but an inevitable consequence of such outsourcing which allows everyone to deny all knowledge). I will not now buy Dyson or siemens or anything else where the guarantee involves D&G.
