Company made a mistake -- how do I get to talk to

The company is 'Computershare' and chances are, if you have any stocks in a Direct-purchase Reinvestment Program (DRIP) you've been dealing with them. Among my holdings was 27 shares of Smucker's (the jam people). My last statement indicated the the shares (all but .33 shares) were escheated. That's an old English word for 'granted to the State'. One of the customer service persons said that the account was considered dormant because I failed to cash a $5.00 check in 2002. Of course, I got my statements every month and I paid my taxes on the dividends and I had Verizon and Johnson and Johnson stock in my account and that I bought additional shares of these every month -- but Computershare made a big mistake by escheating me and I can't talk to one person that can actually help me. My son even went to their Canton, Mass office which is more of a fortress and he couldn't get beyond the security desk in the lobby. So much for fiduciary resposibility...
