camcorder lost

put my camcorder into a shop,'pal's television services in coventry' and they went and lost it. He wants me to spend hundreds of pounds to buy a new one but it is not my fault he can't find it. It has been in the shop since last august. In my opinion it was easy for him to make a quick few quid out of it and now wants more from me.
