This is a letter I recently wrote to 1and1 Internet, Inc. I can't speak for the quality of the service. It may or may not be ok. I do recall that it was very difficult to get service from them. The real problem arises when you try and cancel. It seems to be easier now but last year and earlier this year it was unbelievable. Now, I am left with the fallout. Basically, they are completely impossible to deal with. I suppose if all goes well, all is well. But if you have a problem with them, look out. All I can say is good luck. 'Last November 2005, I tried to terminate my service with 1&1 by sending an email telling them i wanted to cancel my service. I never got a response but noticed that my credit card was charged again. I believe i sent another email telling them to stop. I am not sure but i believe in December 2005, i went on line to see if it was cancelled and if necessary cancel the account. My recollection is that i was not sure whether the cancellation actually worked. I recall the account being locked and not being able to access much. I kind of went around and around with that and decided that perhaps it meant that it was cancelled. It was kind of confusing. (I am definitely not a tech person, although i think this was a user friendly issue) I then got an email in march 2006 telling me that 1and1 tried to charge my credit card and it would not go through. I called 1and1 service and explained that i had cancelled the service months and months ago. I was informed that i didn't cancel the right way and that I had to do it on line. I said i had tried that. but i did try to do it again and the same thing it would not work. I called back again and was told to follow the directions. I tried again and to be honest, like the time many months ago i wasnt sure whether the thing worked or not. I presumed with all the indications to 1and1 that I had cancelled, it must have been cancelled. I never recall any more charges. The next thing i heard was a letter from nco collections agency in July 2006. I wrote back to 1and1 in July and again told them that I had cancelled the service and that i should not be billed for it. I believe that the charge was for the first quarter of 2006. the next thing i hear is in November and that the charge is on my credit report as unpaid. I have done much research and have found that this problem is not uncommon with 1and1. Being an attorney with a federal law enforcement agency, I am aware of what avenues to pursue in this matter. I also intend to pursue a complaint with the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office. The point is that I have repeatedly tried to cancel this service and now am being pursued for $48 for services i neither used nor wanted and tried to cancel over a year ago. I have tried in good faith to stop the service. Even if I didn't consumate the cancellation as they wanted, I am the purchaser of the services and if I was repeatedly unsuccessful, it seems that a reasonable alternative could be utilized. 1and1 is acting in bad faith in pursuing a claim that is not justified. All i want 1and1 to do is remove the charge and report back to the collections agency and the credit bureau that this was a billing error on their part. we will see what happens.
