Why monogamy?

While I understand the importance of 'sexual purity' from a STD perspective, why is it that we are limited to one sexual partner at a time in the current marriage model? Iknow, I know, some people live in the 'open marriage' or 'the life style' situations, but they are in the vast minority. We all have situations when we fall in love with another person while married, right? Call them 'crushes' or 'infatuations' or whatever...unless you break the bonds of your marriage, nothing will come of them except a vague aching, and maybe a vague feeling that you sort of sinned in your heart ('lusted in your heart' per Jimmy Carter), and the whole thing is a downer. You just KNOW, also, that if you like that other person so much, having an affair is the last thing you want to do, because for sure that will lead to dissoultion. Grrr!
