university or his girlfriend?

Our 16-year old son has been offered a three-year scholarship at a superb university, which is about 90 kilometers away. Because he is dating a girl at school we are concerned this relationship might stop him taking up this scholarship course or affect his commitment to it. We are uncertain how to deal with this and frightened to upset him in case it backfires on us. His school says he is academically bright but only prepared to do the minimum of work. They feel the university will give him the focus and discipline he needs. I overheard his girlfriend tell him that if he accepts the scholarship offer their relationship will be over. I pray that he makes the right decision.
