Unfair service

It's the first time I'm visiting the USA and was staying in Rancho Santa Margarita. I booked a City Tour to LA as well as a tour to Universal studios. I needed to find a place to sleep in Santa Monica. When I browsed the Internet, I found info on the Hotel California and sent an e-mail to enquire. They responded and informed me that they have 1 room available and I can send my credit card info to confirm the booking. When I arrived in Santa Monica, the Hotel California was not aware of any booking in my name. After investigating, we found out that there is another Hotel California near Stanford University , which of cause, because it was my 1st time to the US, I didn't realise was 40 miles from San Francisco and these people also never mentioned it on their website. I contacted them and explained the situation and asked if we could come to an agreement to get some of my money back. Pete said he couldn't help me and that's that. I think it was very unfair and when I visit San Francisco, I will make a point of not supporting the Hotel California. Their advertising should be clearer - I mentioned in my 1st e-mail to them that I was going to do the LA tour and that on it's own should have given them an idea that something was wrong - I obviously couldn't be in the same town as them on the same day of my tours! We in South Africa would have helped a new visitor in/to our country if something like this happened!
