Problem #1: I actually was manhandled and hurt by two staff members in the E.D. alone, one R.N. wrenched my arm twice in an attempt to 'Find an IV site' even after being made aware that I had carpal tunnel syndrome. A tech. smacked the top of the same hand several times (HARD) trying to get a 'Vein to stand up.' By 8 hours later, after being able to write in a school workbook at triage, I couldn't even hold a pen, fork, etc. My hand was terribly bruise, hurt, and was swollen. Problem 2: Even after throwing a fit, all 3 of my seizure medications were withheld for over 12 hours. I had a grand mal seizure one day and another the following, after being seizure free for one year. Problem #2: I was only given 1/3 of the correct dose of one of my seizure medication throughout my 5 day stay. I have the original document ordering the meds, and it was correct, but was altered when I was sent to the floor. Problem #3: 2 residents decided they were going to start a Central Line, and they opted for the subclavical approach. This was 9 hours after I had been told it would only be an hour before the were going to insert it. I went the entire time without pain medication for the infection I had, plus all my joint pain, and neuroapthy! They failed to insert it after 3 attempts. So, they left and went to call surgery to do it. My partner told them to NOT ALLOW ANY OTHER RESIDENTS TO TOUCH ME! Well, 2 scrub-clad people came into the room who identified themselves as being 'from the surgery tteam.' So, thinking they were surgeons, I left them attempt to place the Central Line in my jugular. Well, 1.25 hours and 120+ sticks later, they finally got it in place. I was in agony. I had been promised pain meds just as soon as the line was in. Well, I passed out from all the trauma and when I came to I realized I was in more pain then when I feel asleep. I asked the nurse if I'd been given pain medication. She said that she, 'Doesn't give pain meds. to a sleeping patient...because, obviously if I fell asleep, I couldn't have been in that much pain.' ALL THESE AND MORE PROBLEMS/MED ERRORS WERE REPORTED TO THE PATIENT ADVOCATE WHO TOOK AMPLE NOTES OF THE ISSUES AND DOCUMENTED THE INJURY AN OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES! IF ANYONE HAS SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH UMASS WORCESTER, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! thethorinator@aol.com
