I am monumentally bored teaching English. Personally, I love to read and write, but I loathe grading the nonstop drivel my students produce, expecting superior ratings for trite, boring essays. I rarely ever grade any papers anymore. I put grades in the grade book and toss the papers in the recycle bin. When students ask me if they are going to get their papers back, I tell them I am saving them for my portfolio. Most students -- and parents -- do not give a shit as long as they are making passing grades, and the majority never ask for their papers back. The only work I ever give back are multiple choice tests because I can grade those by machine. I know I should quit teaching, but what other job will allow me to be home by 4pm most days and will give me my summers off? The pay is above average in my area and the benefits are great. Can you blame me?

The truth is, I used to care a lot more before No Child Left Behind made it virtually impossible to enjoy teaching. All of these ridiculous hoops to jump have taken all the joy out of the classroom for both teachers and students. Despite the fact that I have no interest in grading the endless rounds of essays mandated by the county and state-dictated curriculum, I remain an effective teacher. My students have high success rates on all of the measurement instruments, and they love my class. I've been voted "Most Popular Teacher," "Funniest Teacher," and "Teacher of the Month" several times. However, this will be my last year of teaching. It's simply not fun for me anymore.

You're probably a nice person, but you should find another job. I had so many teachers that didn't care, (and you don't), and they were the worst. Try a library position or something. Teachers should care.
