The politics of kids sports

I have a 7 year old son that is a very good baseball player. It is amazing to me that, since his father is in Afghanistan serving our country, and thus not able to be a volunteer coach, my son is suffering. The only kids to be picked for the 'all-star' teams, or 'traveling teams' are the ones who have their dad either as a head coach or an assistant coach. These kids are not even close to being the best kids playing, but since 'daddy' is the coach, they always seem to make the team. How do you explain to a 7,8,9 year old, who deserves to play, that he didn't make the team because his dad isn't one of the coaches??
