shoddy workmanship

It seems like nothing these days is made to last, or even to work at all. I recently bought a grass catcher for a riding lawnmower, $400 no less, and the hard plastic arm that's supposed to fit over the place where, without it, the grass blows out of the mower, doesn't form a seal, not even close, so the huge dual bags end up with about an inch of cut grass in them while the rest blows right out all over the yard; and to make matters worse, no one seems capable of making this right or even taking responsibility, not the manufacturer, not the place I bought it from, not the lawnmower's maker which is who told me which catcher to buy. I wonder if we're starting to see the effects of crappy education and what seems to be the intentional dumbing down of Americans in general.
