Payment Shield Insurance

Why do we pay insurance? My husband and I have recently bought an new property and we are sold 3 policies from our Financial Advisor, we were told that they are a respected firm 'Payment Shield' but now I think we were sold these policies so that the Financial Advisor could make some compensation. Our Ceiling (plaster and artex came down last Sunday evening) there were no obvious signs to indicate that it would do this. As you can imagine, its made a mess. Its an old house and it must have had a build up 80 years + or dust and coal dust in the loft and ceiling. Its covered the whole house in black coal dust and ruined the stair and landing carpet as well as the wallpaper and paint work. The gist of the story is, we contacted Payment shield to inform them that we would like to make a claim (having never done so before). They send someone out who said it 'was normal wear and tear that had caused the ceiling to fall down and due to that were probably not covered' their report went back to Payment shield together with the photos of the devastation and sure enough, we are not covered. We were told that it should be something that is regularly maintained, now tell me Which householders regularly maintain their ceilings if there are no obvious signs that they will fall down. Also one other problem is that not even our carpets are covered. The whole thing stinks!! we have subsequently been told that if it was accidental, i.e 'we were walking up the stairs and the ladders accidentally bumped into the ceiling' scenario then everything would have been covered. I am so sick of big organisations taking hard earned cash from honest hardworking people and when you want something in return, what do you get? a big smack in the teeth!
