overcharged by handyman

I signed a contract with a handyman for work on my kitchen. I thought I was signing a total-cost contract and paid him $2500 in advance as I was going away. On my return, he had not quite finished, did another hour's work and left me a bill for an extra $1500. I refused to pay. He showed me contract that had in small print hourly wage plus this, plus that and is suing me for balance. He did not complete work, left paint splotches on another wall and mismatched my outlet covers. Do I have any recourse? We are meeting ofr arbitration and I want to be prepared with my side.
