Researchers in San Diego and Los Angeles reviewed information on nearly 67,000 people between 1989 and 1997. After accounting for age, education and health, they found that divorced, widowed and never-married people were more likely to die sooner than married couples living together. People who were divorced or separated were 27 percent more likely to have died than the married couples. Widows and widowers had 39 percent higher risk, and those who never tied the knot were 58 percent more likely to die.
