Nissan North America - service staff incompetence

In early 2005 the ‘Check Engine' light came on in our 2001 Nissan Sentra. Here is the timeline and how much it cost us to finally get the problem resolved: 4/20/2005 - $592.58 – We took the car to Central Ave. Nissan (140 Columbus Ave., Tuckahoe, NY 10707) to resolve the ‘Check Engine' light issue. We had repairs done according to their recommendations; however it didn't take care of the problem. 7/11/2005 - $37.00 – Our car failed an inspection because of the ‘Check Engine Light'. The only way to resolve this is by fixing the problem or getting a waiver. 8/04/2005 - $1,213.81 – We have all oxygen sensors replaced as that is the only solution the mechanics can come up with. This still doesn't fix the problem however we receive a waiver and are able to pass the inspection with it. We are warned that if we don't resolve the problem within a year that we won't be able to pass next year's inspection. 8/09/2006 - $0.00 – Before this year's inspection we took the car to Nissan East Coast Auto Group (340 Sylvan Ave, Rt 9 W, Englewood Cliffs, NJ). They told us that this problem was a part of a recall and performed all repairs free of charge. This fixed the problem. We spent a total of $1843.39 because Central Ave Nissan wasn't able to figure out the problem on 4/20/2005. We wrote Nissan a letter and received a reply stating that the vehicle is outside of the manufacturer's warranty. This is complete nonsense since this repair was mandated by a national recall. I spoke to Jason Greer, the Regional Specialist for the Northeast Region and he made it clear that Nissan of North America refuses to take any responsibility for the quality of their cars and the competence of their auto repair staff.
