My Medical School Secret

To get into medical school, a student needs to have excellent grades, volunteer, be involved, hell some need to even get published. Well, if you white...and male. Im black, and a woman. I am in the middle of my residency now and I have to get something off my chest. The truth is if you are a minority or female (or in my case both) you can get into the best medical schools (even Harvard) with no experiences and grades that are significantly less than everyone elses. I had a 3.2 GPA with no experience except for volunteering at a food shelter and I got into one of the top 25 medical schools. I never thought it was fair. I had friends in college with a 3.7 that didnt get to do their dream because they were white men. I met people in medical school who laugh about this because they know they shouldn't have gotten in. One girl told me shes happy its this way because men (especially white men) get everything else, we can have this. This is something the pubic doesn't know. That people are becoming our doctors who are NOT the best. I'm glad because it helped me but i know i didn't deserve this. It drives me to be a better MD but at the same time, its not right.
