she wants to move to a different state in a year to be near her aging parents in a cold climate. I have a son in this state who won't be 18 for another 2 years who may not want to move away from his mom. what do I do?

Your first obligation is to your son, who'll always be there for you. She must know that you can't just uproot a 16-year old kid and expect them to start over new someplace else. Only an idiot would do that. Let her go and ask if she minds if you use her as a reference with her replacement.
