Minimum Wage

They're trying to raise the minimum wage where I live. It's a ballot measure in the election next week, so I keep seeing these sob stories about people working two jobs and still not getting by. What I want to know is - why are these people trying to get by with a shitty job in the first place?Fast food prep is for teenagers, not middle-aged people with families. Why not improve the job market, rather than try and make shitty jobs into family-sustaining ones. They blame big business for not paying more. But can't we blame the employees themselves, at least a little, for putting themselves in these positions in the first place? So you're 30, have four kids, and working as a cashier - what the fuck did you think was going to happen? Did you not realize that you would never make enough to have a descent life?

I think most people use the bad economy as an excuse to fail. There are plenty of excellent jobs out there. Maybe they aren't in the field that you want, but if you're unwilling to be flexible, that's your problem. If you work hard and are willing to relocate and dedicate yourself to work for awhile, it's quite easy to find a great job. But if you insist on something you enjoy over something that pays well, and you can't move because of your own bad choices (like having kids before you could afford them), or are just scared, I have no sympathy for you. Yes, some people really are stuck in shitty jobs through no fault of their own. But those people are the minority or minimum wage earners. The rest of them could do better if they tried harder.

To the OP: In case you haven't noticed, the economy is shit! I don't give a rip how the government spins and doctors the unemployment figures. They lie! Yeah, the Obama admin brags about all those startup jobs that were created. Those jobs, for the most part, are minimum wage jobs hence, why many are working for minimum wage. When a college grad with masters degree must take a job tending bar, something is definitely amiss. When a kid graduating with a college degree must move back in with his/her parents, because they can't find a decent paying job, I'd say things are pretty bad. Add to all that, the blatant abuse of H1B visas. Business whines to the government they can't find qualified people to fill jobs which is pure BS. Presto, people from India and Pakistan are imported to take the jobs, at a much lower rate of pay I might add. Until our whores in congress start putting the overall interests of this country first, rather than whoring themselves to monied special interest groups, things will continue to slide downhill.
