low page output HP Q5949A

Despite being a lowly-paid teacher I bought the latest HP LaserJet printer model 3390, just to find out that the toner Q5949A seems to deliver much less than the 2,500 pages it should. Not only that the toner costs about $64, and last a couple of weeks only. What should I do?
