Lousey fruit at grocery store

I paid $1.50 each for two grapefruits at the local Giants and they were the worst grapefruits I have every tasted. Their color was beautiful on the outside and they smell good. So what happened? Are they spraying the fruit to make consumers think that the fruit is ripe and good?
