We're not allowed to have pets in the house-turned-apartment-building I live in, but my neighbors upstairs kept taking in stray kittens and feeding them outdoors, so there were always two or three cats around. There was one kitten, a tiny black and white tuxedo, who loved climbing onto people's laps and just curling up to sleep, or crawling all over them. You'd sit down on the porch, or on the porch couch (left behind by a previous tenant) and suddenly she'd quietly appear out of nowhere and make herself at home on your lap. She never clawed or anything; I think she understood that people didn't like that. Anyways, if I ever left the door open in the apartment, i'd turn around, and there'd she be, standing just inside the doorway, paws neatly before her, just looking around. I was so enchanted I started giving her food, luring her in with tuna in water and bits of chicken I had around the house. Eventually, she started spending the night, and meowing to be let in during the winter, and pretty soon she was my cat. I wouldn't let her out or in if there was anyone to see, and she caught on pretty quick to the idea of hiding away from strangers. Anyways, the upstairs neighbors lost their cat, and I won her, and when they moved, they left me all of the food and stuff she hadn't been using since i'd stolen her away. It turns out they took care of strays until they could find homes for them, and they figured since I wanted her so much I could just have her, but I still feel pretty guilty about how I went about acquiring my favorite cat in the whole world.
