JC Penney Credit Policy

I have been a JC Penney credit card holder for approximately 20 years. I have only had one payment post late in all that time due to an error on my part when attempting to pay my bill on line (I paid the late fee with no protest since it was my fault). My latest credit limit was $2000 and my outstanding balance is usually less than $100.00 and most of the time I pay in full. In October of 2005, I was forced to file medical bankruptcy due to my husband's long-term illness. At the time, I had no outstanding balance on my JC Penney credit card so it was never a part of the bankruptcy proceedings. On October 29, 2006, I attempted to make a $20 purchase using my JC Penney Credit card (I had paid the latest bill in full) and the transaction was declined. I immediately called the credit card center and was told that my account had been closed because I had filed bankruptcy. The rep at JC Penney gave me a number to call GE Financial and they told me that they had the right to cclose my account withou notice beacuse it was a part of the 'fine print' on the original application or subsequent changes in credit policy. When I protested that my credit history with JC Penney was excellent, I was told that they really didn't care what my history was, the account was closed and I would never be eligible to reagin credit with JC Penney. The GE rep was very very rude and told me that by filing medical bankruptcy, I had shown GE Financial that I was an irresponsible credit risk. Once again, I told them that my bankruptcy had in no way affected my JC Penney account - it was never a part of the bankruptcy action and under the US Bankruptcy laws, I could not file bankruptcy affecting my JC Penney account for a minimum of 7 years. Again, the rep was very very rude and basically told me to shut up. So now I will take all of my business (Both credit and cash) to Macy's, Sears, Kohl's, Dillard's, and even Walmart. At least these retailers have enough respect for my credit history with them to ignore my 'irresponsible' credit risk.

The same thing just happened to me. I have always paid my JCP account on time and did not include it in my bankruptcy. I went online to make a payment and was told my account was blocked. If I knew they were going to pull this I would have included them in my bankruptcy!! I am so done with JCP!!
