Ignorant mother

My mother has a high school education (sort of) and constantly tries to argue about topics that she has little or no understanding of. She constantly tries to turn things into insults and arguments because she can sense her own ignorance and gets defensive. Whenever I discuss sociological, economic or political issues with my father or sister (both college educated) she tries to tell me I'm too stupid to discuss such topics. I once tried to explain what autism was to her and she told me that she believe I have autism. She used autism as an insult. She constantly says racist things and when I point out why her comments are racist/problematic, she tells me I don't understand the world. I'm a social work major. I have a better grasp of social issues than she does. She doesn't know the difference between opinion and fact. She never respects my opinion, but if my sister expresses the same opinion she automatically agrees. My mother's lack of education leads her to become a sheep of my sister's opinions. Even my sister believes that she lives in her own little world where her uninformed opinions are facts. I know that I need to respect my elders, but in a drastically changing social and economic environment, life experience can only take you so far. If she didn't want me to be smarter than her why did she insist I go to college? Why is she so argumentative and defensive when she is so willing to blindly follow? I used to defend her opinions from my father (divorced) when he called her dumb. I know she's not dumb but she's so ignorant and offensive. At the very least, it would be more tolerable if she didn't try to use things she doesn't understand to insult me.

You might want to keep in mind that she's still your mom. I'm sure she had to deal with waaay more crap raising you than you've dealt with by her arguing with you now. Don't put all your stock in intellect when it comes to human relations. Just because you're more educated doesn't excuse your being a dick to your own mother. If anything, it should give you the tools to be more tolerant.
