Ignition Interlock Device

A judge ruled that my boyfriend's car had to be equipped with the ignition interlock device for a year. It has been installed on his car for over 3 months. Because of this device, his car has had to be repaired three times. The mechanics (different ones) have sited the interlock device as the reason for the mechanical failue of the battery, starter, etc. This device evidentally causes the battery to die because it requires power from the battery in order for the device to work. When this is told to the one company in the central florida area that installs these devices, they say it is not their problem. What gives?? It has already added an extra $475 in repairs to the auto - is this legal? We could not afford to hire an attorney - but seems like there must be others that may have similar problems with these devices.
