This our last Hollan America Cruise. Amsterdam Hotel Manager (Dutch Officer) Was Very Rude Our group was sitting on the Ledo deck in the smoking section enjoying a conversation with 4 other tables. One of those was occupied by a HAL nurse and her husband (a Doctor). He was smoking a cigar as was one in our group. The Hotel Manager (I found this out from the fellow serving us) comes up and loudly yelled at the Dr. to 'put out that cigar! Now!' When the Dr. tried to ask why and explain that he had observed many passengers on all cruises smoking cigars there and that HAL sold them every night at the bar (20 ft.way) and the staff cut them for you and gave out cigar ash trays - he was cutoff. The Officer then turned to the Nurse who was in uniform and yelled at her for not doing her job. His last statement was 'you have no guts, now tell him to put it out'. A few minutes later the Nurse was paged. When she returned I heard her say that she was in trouble. My husband asked her if she knew it was a policy and she said if she had her husband would have never smoked there. They left. A man in our group then went to the bar and asked what was the policy and the bartender said he had been on many cruises and had never seen any one asked not to smoke cigars. The very same Officer came trough about an hour later and greeted a cigar smoking passenger in Dutch (he was from Amsterdam) who probably smoked 5 Coheba cigars a day at the same table the Nurse and her husband sat at. I am sure no less then 30 passengers smoked cigars on the Ledo deck at one time or another and no one else was asked before or after not to. So, here is my take. The Hotel Manager is not doing his job, else everyone, including his staff would know the policy and you do not yell at employees or passengers especially ones popular with the passengers. End note. On day of debarking (Nov 9, 06) The Dr. told my husband that his wife was resigning and mainly because HAL gives them no where to complain. The Dr. said he went to an officer and asked who he should speak to and was told . 'God, he's the only one who cares or will lesson.' This our last HAL Cruise.
