Hit&Run&Sorry

Five years ago, I hit a man while driving home. Then I used to live outside the city. I clearly saw his face as he turned belatedly and the headlights lit him up. I thought he was dead. I panicked and raced home. Just last month, I saw the same man on my way to work. He walks with crutches now and begs on a street corner near my workplace. At first I was afraid he would recognize me but he didn’t. I don’t know if the accident ruined him or he was already a bum. But every morning, I press $20 in his hands before hurrying away. I am so sorry and I don’t know how I can make up for what I did.

You sound like a good person. Paying him off daily is not necessarily the solution. Because you don't know if you ruined his life or he was already a bum, why not take some time to talk to him and ask him about his life story. First off, one of the things street people often appreciate (aside from the money) is for someone to treat them like a human, with respect. Talking to him may brighten his day and it could shed valuable information on how he got where he is. You are beating yourself up not knowing how he came to be in this position and are holding yourself responsible. Maybe he hurt his legs in a totally seperate incident? At any rate, it wouldn't hurt to talk to him. Then you can know for sure and plan your next move accordingly.
