While attending camp for Korean children, the camp head said grace before every meal. I am not religious, so at first I did not stand up. Most people did not speak Korean anyway, the camp being mostly for adoptees, and the prayer was said in Korean, so some may not have known its meaning. I am the son of Koreans, so I knew what it meant. Every time I did not stand up, I was criticised more and more, until my counselor used various methods to cajole me to say it. Eventually, after three days, I cracked and rose like everyone else did. I'm ashamed now, but nothing can keep me from holding fast next year.
