Gas Bill

I bought a house approx 4 years ago and rented it out in rooms and flats (total 5) but never lived there myself. When I purchased it I transfered the Gas account into my name and stayed with 'British Gas' the then supplier. I have recently recieved my 1st bill (after contacting them when I found a letter at the property) for £4224.41 and am very shocked to put it mildly as I have presumed for the past 4 years that the tennants have been paying the bill quarterly as I have not been notified otherwise. I believe British Gas have been negligent by allowing this bill to get so large and never even attempt to contact me or disconnect the supply. I contacted British Gas and they have said I have to pay as the origional account was in my name. Anyone out there know if I have a case. Thanks David
