
Forced to Lie

I work for a tele-services company named WEST and we sell a product called Video Professor Computer Lessons. I thought it wouldn't bother me since I just answer calls and I don't have to call out, but I was wrong. The lessons are ok I guess (From what I've seen anyway, I suppose that they could help SOMEBODY ... but since I wasn't given a real opportunity to test them it's hard to tell.), but the real problems are the Company (Well, companies I guess since WEST actually lets them get away with it.) and the offer were forced to make to the caller. People think they're only getting one FREE CD, but we have to try to get them to commit to one of those recurring payment offers. That wouldn't be so bad, if it werent for the fact that I was actually instructed to lie and try to trick the customer. I was trained one way when I got hired, but after I got put on this product I was 're-trained' so that I would know how to speak the offer in a way that I would quickly zip past the unattractive parts an emphasize the parts that sound good. I have to stick to the script since we were told that 'Our lawyers have crafted this script in such a way that the customer can easily purchase the recurring offer without realizing they've done so. We want to be able to trick the customer into giving us there credit card information first, then try to sneak the recurring offer past them before they realize what hit them. This way we have evidence that they agreed to the offer if they ever try to sue us.' (That's pretty much a direct quote from a Video professor rep who came to visit us when I asked him why they're so crazy about us staying on script.) The other problem is that the number you call to try and cancel is almost always unmanned. When I asked one rep why there were so many people calling us about the CS (Customer Service) number not working, she told me that they were in the process of moving the CS pit (where they take the calls) to another location, so there was some 'lost efficiency'. I asked another rep and he said that most of the CS staff got sick from Bird Flu. Another rep told me their CS staff worked out of New Orleans and were trying to rebuild there sight. I just don't know what to do! I'm supposed to be a Christian, but I am forced to lie everyday at my job! They even recently told us we have to give a personal tesimony about the lessons so that no matter what lesson the caller wants we have to say How much it helped us and how easy it was to learn with it. I said that I barely got to use any of the lessons and was told that I should just make some stories up and 'lie through your teeth. They don't know who you are anyway.' (agian ... that was a direct quote). I tried to get some time to use the lessons so I could be truthfull when I gave testimony, but (other than the 45 minutes we were given during training to look at 60 hours worth of lessons) we have to 'earn' the right to look at the lessons, or buy them ourselves! I have prayed and prayed and I still can't decide what to do. I can't tell me friends, they're all Christians and I know what they'll tell me to do, but I NEED THIS JOB TO FEED MY KIDS! I am posting this as an anonymous confession in the hopes it will somehow make me feel better by getting it out. Maybe I can get a different perspective on this now. I don't like to say this about anybody, but I hate John Shearer and his stupid company! I hate WEST too for allowing that meanie to decide how we will sell his stupid product!
