On 1/31/03, after setting up an appointment with Empire Services, a salesmen from Preferred Flooring, a dealer of Empire Services of Tampa, Florida, came to our house and sold us what he said was 800 sq. ft. of wool carpeting with 10 year Stainmaster warranty for $2,306. The salesman specifically stated that our carpet would last 10 years. When we asked him for a brochure for the carpet, he said the installers would give us a brochure when they installed the carpet. When the installers came, we asked for a brochure for the carpet and never received one. After they installed the carpet, there was a tremendous amount of carpet left over that they removed and took with them. Not only was the installation of the padding uneven and inferior, but the carpet is now covered with track marks and stains which we cannot remove with a commercial shampooer. This is reprehensible – that this carpet now looks like it's 25 years old - considering there is very little traffic in the house. In fact, we have an existing carpet (not installed by Empire) that is over 10 years old and looks newer than the 3 year old carpet that was installed by Empire. When we recently called customer service at Empire to ask what brand of carpet was installed, they told us it was Shaw Carpet and mailed us a brochure for Shaw Carpet. When we called Shaw Carpet and gave them the carpet numbers that Empire had given us, Shaw Carpet told us it was not their carpet. We only found out recently by picking up a section of the carpet that it says on the back of the carpet, “100% nylon.” However, when we did a “burn” test on the carpet, it might not be nylon, but possibly Olefin. Empire Services sent out a carpet inspector on 1/6/06. The reason we are complaining now is because: 1. We have been a victim of “bait and switch,” 2. We were way overpriced for inferior materials – we did not get what we paid for, and, 3. The carpet padding was installed incorrectly throughout the living rooms and 3 rooms so the floor is uneven.
