electricity meter readings

I get my electricity and gas from British Gas. I have asked for my meter to be read and they state they will only do it if i pay £69.00 plus VAT. when i complained to them i thouight they should bear the cost of tersting their ow equipment they said if i was requesting it to be checked i woudl have to pay £34.50 plus VAT. Siuddenyl the price went down. The meter has never been checked since i moved in 2 years ago and prior to that i have no record but it is an old meter and i doubt it has been checked before for a while. My readings were 888 over a 6 month period (winter) and the next 6 month (summer)were 2502. I asked them to check the meter before any more huge amounts were run up but they refused unless i agreed to pay for the test. the reading for the first half year averaged 4.86kw per day now it is 13.71kw per day.Wouldn't you think they should have to test equipment at least once every two years. After all it could be not totting up enough! Any one else experienced this problem?
