To: Richland Administration/I.E.P Team RE: Devon S. Ford-8th grade I am writing in regards to a few concerns of educational goals for my son, Devon Ford. I, Vanessa Perry, am requesting my son Devon Ford be re- evaluated for IEP as soon as possible, and wish to Include the following information. 1) The affidavit/assessment provided by Dr. Diggs.(504} plan. 2) The prescription drug Concerta & how it increases the affects of Tourettes Syndrome. 3) Involvement of Instructional management with specific strategies e.g.; Behavior management plan that focus providing support; to obtain his possible academic ability 4) IEP decision based on short and long term goals. 5) Administration to authorize resources. (if needed) I am aware that there is not a one-size-fits-all IEP, tailoring to unique needs. I just want an assessment/determination to be reasonably calculated. I feel that If Devon were able to receive a few simple adjustments- with the appropriate instruction, he can and will function proficiently. Mrs. Mayes-(the Richland Principle) and myself, had stated in the previous IEP meeting; the behavior in question is an “isolated incident.“ She and I also stated that his “school records will show he has NEVER displayed ANY type of physical or verbal disrespect toward any school personnel what-so-ever.” Devons grades & awards from Rio Bravo Greeley School are proof that a few minor adjustments had/did accommodate his needs to help reach his full learning potential. e.g.; While at RBG he enrolled in such classes as “Life-Skills, “Anger-Management” “Home-Work Club“ & “Study Hall.” All were positive “interventions” relating to ADHD, all were positive influences on him. He had also received a certificate for the “MOST IMPROVED STUDENT.” (three months in a row!) Resulting in him trying even harder to achieve. I have also noticed that documents submitted by school personnel (for IEP assessment) contained errors e.g.; The print out I received of Devon's school attendance record show 19 unexcused absences- when in fact he had only been enrolled in Richland 5 days. Therefore, I understand no current I.E.P was in place as an intervention plan when behavior occurred. Unfortunately, the only intervention plan chosen was the arrest of my son; which I did not even receive a phone call about until after he was hand-cuffed, taken to police station, questioned & fingerprinted. School records relating to incident versus police report are conflicting as well. Nonetheless, if not corrected will remain on Devon's permanent school record as true occurrences. In closing, I would also like to mention the fact that a student having a disorder is irrelevant when it comes to the issue of Mrs. Chavira shoving her students as a form of discipline for insubordination. I question her credentials in relation to resolving such issues w/peaceful resolutions and appropriate problem solving tactics. Anytime physical consequences are allowed, the school system risks inappropriate use of “unlawful physical discipline;” AND models behavior that students transfer to other settings. It gives license to what we otherwise consider unacceptable; in-fact depending on the relationship of people involved; this hands-on behavior we sometimes call an “assault”, “domestic violence”, or “abuse”. often misinterpreted as discipline, punishment, or “intervention.” I submit in writing as to have on record-including teacher employee record: “An Informed, responsible & a well-educated society, have known for a long time that physical discipline of a child, by-the-hands of a teacher (or anyone else) is unprofessional & unacceptable behavior; Ultimately, it can destroy a child's enthusiasm for learning as-well-as set the stage for additional emotional and behavioral problems. As a parent, I have (and still am) instilling in my children that any physical contact with another person as a method of expressing displeasure with what a person says or does is WRONG! Character education begins at home-but should not be contradicted in school. For students who never get this type of instruction at home, Our schools can not fail them I do hope you understand my concerns; as I do wish to resolve this matter as a possible smooth transition. This whole incident has affected Devon, myself & our whole family as an unfortunate & negative experience. I'm hoping we can come to some type of arrangement that will better suit everyone involved. Thank you for your concerns.
