To whom it may concern, Thank you for taking the time to hear my compliant. I feel that certain business practices should be investigated and controlled. Here's my story: In August 2006 we ventured over to Starved Rock in Utica, Illinois. We decided that it would be nice to stay over night somewhere and have an extra day out there since it was so gorgeous and we enjoying every moment of it. All of the area hotel and motels were non vacant and we asked where are others; we were pointed toward a few directions in the area. We ended up in Ottawa, Illinois. My husband pulled into a Motel called “Surrey Motel”, my daughter and I sat in the car, while he was inside, I observed vagrants, drug users, and the motel itself was so run down, I prayed that my husband did not get a room there; of course he did, out of desperation and lacking his better judgment. He tried to assure me that it would be alright, he took us to the room...Oh my goodness, what I saw, there were flies all over the room, it was extremely FILTHY, the bathroom window was ajar in such a way that we would not be able to close it; the odor in that room was nauseating! We didn't stay in there more than 3 minutes, we went back to the Starved Rock, meanwhile I am in tears, I am fearful of what diseases we would contract from that Motel, I was fearful of what the night would bring, what drug addicts surrounding that Motel would do. A couple of hours later, we decided to try and receive a refund and just go home, the girl at the front desk claimed that the “owner” was not present and that they had no way of getting a hold of her, she also informed me that the owner never gives anybody a refund no matter what. We decided to give the owner time to return, we went out to dine for approximately 3 hours and returned to the Motel and she again claimed that the owner was not present still and has not heard from her. I simply gave the key to the girl and asked her to explain the situation to the owner and I hoped to receive some kind of a refund. I phoned the Motel when we got home about 9:15 pm and a gentleman answered the phone and claimed no owner was present. I again phoned the next morning at around 9:30 am and a woman with an extremely heavy, difficult to comprehend accent answered the phone and began screaming, she claimed that we used the room, that we used the shower and the towels and the linen, she called me a liar. I knew we would go nowhere. She refused to return us any of our $53.50 in cash that we gave her. In America we should be able to use Hotel and Motels that are safe and SANITARY. I feel that this particular Motel should be heavily investigated; the card sells false advertisement stating that it is renovated, and it also states that rooms are modern, it is so obvious for many years it has not been touched. Stay away from this awful place!!!!
