Deep Water

I love the water. I love engines. Nothing makes me happier than those two things combined. However, that's all changed now. I hate it. I do power boating as a hobby, and I immensely enjoy it since I got my licence for them. I went down to our sailing clubs lake for some fresh air, and there was an event on and I got dragged into doing powerboat duties. I was more than happy to help. I got in this powerboat with another guy and didn't think anything else of the situation. When it was my turn to helm, I jumped at the idea, and happily took the helm. I noticed very quickly that the kill-cord was missing. I asked the guy with me, and he said that the kill-cords didn't fit the stop switch. I was anxious but I took the helm anyway. I didn't go fast. I didn't want to, not without the kill-cord. The thing is, before each event, the powerboats are meant to be checked over by the people who are on duty for that day - I wasn't down to help. They should have noticed it was missing a vital part. Anyway, the day ended and I took the boat in. Two other guys took the boat in. One of them approached me later, and asked where the kill-cord was. I explained the situation, but he reprimanded me, even though it wasn't my fault. I take rules seriously, but I also take tellings off very badly. I don't think I want to go power boating again. I've let people down. None of this was my fault. They should have checked the boat over properly and the guy with me (whose older than me) should've known about the importance of a kill-cord and how it attaches to that engine. I feel terrible. I don't want to show my face at the sailing club again. Please note: No-one was hurt by our idiocy.
