Credit Card Scam

April 17, 2007 I am sincerely hoping that this letter will reach someone in the media who will take up this matter and investigate the details and hopefully stop this type of business practice once and for all. My story is as follows: I accepted a credit card from GM Cardmember services (General Motors) based on the attractive offer of no interest for one year. I was given credit of $5,000 and did a balance transfer to another credit card that was charging me interest. I was making minimum payments every month, mailing out my checks on the 5th of the month to reach GM by the due date of 20th of the month. I received my February 2007 statement and noticed I was being charged $39 for a late fee. I immediately called customer service regarding the late fee as my check was mailed out on January 5th. The customer service representative said that the late fee would be reversed. Upon receiving my March 2007 statement I noticed that I have been assessed another late fee and that my account is “past due”. Again, I had mailed out a $50 payment on Feb. 5th, 2007. Again, I called customer service to find out why the account was past due and why I was being charged another late fee of $39. I was told by the customer service representative that I had to pay the reversed late fee from the prior month, because I had not done so, I was in default for paying less than the minimum payment, which resulted in another late fee!! Now, I ask you, unless specifically told, I would never ever assume that I would have to pay a late fee that is being reversed. The customer representative never mentioned this to me and had she mentioned it, I would have thought it the most ludicrous practice but would nevertheless have paid it to avoid been overdue and assessed another late charge – which has now pushed me into default and I am being charged interest on this account. I wrote a letter expressing my absolute horror and dismay at this type of business practice and called up GM again asking that they close this account. The customer service representative said they did not want to lose my business and could I give her some time to review the circumstances before I closed the account. I agreed to this. I was given a $5000 credit limit on this card. In February 2007 the very same month that I was assessed a late fee, my credit limit was increased to $7,000. I ask you how can that be, surely if my payment is late the last thing GM should be doing is increasing my credit limit? In my opinion this is the biggest scam and I appeal to the media to please take it on and put a stop to this type of business scam, please expose GM. I, as a consumer, who has good credit, pays my bills on time, is at the mercy of this giant corporation who think they can get away with this and it just has to stop.
