Comcast SSN for identity theft!

Hi, Why is the monopoly Comcast asking for my social security number to sign up for internet and cable service? They always used my Visa credit card before. In addition, I have had service with them before and closed my account in good standing. If they have my SSN and my name and address, they have everything needed for identity theft. The 'Data Base' they are creating smells of invasion of privacy and preparation for thousands of 'accidental identity thefts'. They want a $150 deposit or my SSN. What is wrong with my Visa card? The term 'Robber Barons' comes to mind. John
