British Gas!

In January 2006 I moved house. Prior to moving I contacted Scottish Gas who provided my gas and electricity, and asked them to transfer all my direct debits for gas and electricity to my new address. I was assured that this would be done. However, I began receiving bills from Scottish Power after I moved in so I phoned Scottish Gas to make sure that everything was ok. It was not. They had not transferred my accounts over so I asked them to do so. Again they told me it was all under control. In around March, I was still receiving bills from Scottish Power so I again phoned Scottish Gas who said that only the electricity account had been changed over but my gas account hadn't. They had not closed down the account at my old address and were still taking direct debit payments off of my account. They told me they would sort everything out. I made arrangements to pay Scottish Power the money I owed them and again phoned to check with Scottish Gas about my account with them. I gave them a gas meter reading over the phone and I was told that they had overcharged me. The man on the phone told me they had wrongly taken money off my account from my old address and the meter reading was less than they had estimated so I would be due a refund. I was assured this would be sorted out but I heard nothing for weeks so I phoned them again. In the meantime I had received a bill from Scottish Gas saying I owed them £34.37. I didn't know how this could be since they themselves had told me they owed me money. When I phoned I was told that because I paid by direct debit, this was a mistake. I was to ignore the letter. I was told it would be sorted out. I was told that I was owed apx £60 and a cheque was on its way to me. Again I received nothing. When I phoned again, I was told the cheque had been cancelled and I would not be receiving anything. I then wrote to the complaints department. The address appeared on the bills I had received from them. I explained I paid by direct debit so how was it I owed them money! I told them they had my account details and I had been phoning since January to try to get them to sort out my account. It is now August 24th and I have received a letter from a debt collection agency with threats to cut off my gas supply. I have emailed Jane Williams at the email address found on the Scottish Gas web page 3 times. She contacted me once to say everything had been sorted and to tell me my direct debit payments would go up to include the outstanding bill. She said her colleague had not included this money when my direct debit was set up again for my new address. I then contacted her again asking about the money they owed me and why I had been told twice it was on its way to me and twice it had been cancelled. I have had no reply to date. I also asked for the manager's address but again I have had no answer. I am still receiving threats that my gas will be cut off and that I am being charged more now because I have not paid my alleged debt!I have emailed, phoned, written and am getting nowhere. I have also contacted the debt cllection agency to explain the situation to them. I am absolutely disgusted at the complete harrassment and incompetency of Scottish Gas. Don't touch them with a barge poll!
