Banks Non-information

Did you know that if you have seperate bank accounts when your spouse dies they immediately freeze his/her account and refuse to let you have the last bank statement? if the account is over the banks set limit (anything from £5,000 to £15,000) they will not release the money without probate. Yet there is no mention anywhere of this for customers information. Three local branches of Barclays and their own customer services did not know about this ruling either! My husband was terminally ill for twelve months and had we known of all the worry this was going to cause we would have transferred money so his account was just automatically transferred to me when the bank had seen the Will. The amount in his account was confirmed by Barclays as being about £2 over the limit I had no way of knowing this owing to their refusal to send my husbands last bank statement)and they are therefore making me obtain probate - more solicitors fees! and six weeks since they were notified of my husbands death! - probate will probably take a further 4 to 6 weeks - I just hope I have enough money to see me through. I know one thing I shall be looking very carefully where to move my account in future - anyone know an honest bank?? - one who tells you ALL their rules about transfer of money when your spouse dies.
