On May 24th, 2006 I bought my eight month old, female Yorkshire terrier from Mavis Jackson, a breeder in Georgia. I was informed at the time of the purchase that the puppy was healthy and up-to-date on her shots not needing to be seen by a veterinarian. However, on June 6th, 2006 both my mother and I noticed red spots on my chest and arms. Therefore, I took her to my veterinarian. These red spots noticed on my body were the early stage of ringworm lesions. This puppy which, I was told by Mavis Jackson, had thin hair and flaky skin, was actually covered from her head to her paws in a severe case of ringworm. I have since been treating my puppy for ringworm with cream, shampoo, and oral medication. Mavis Jackson told me prior to purchasing my puppy that when the puppy was younger she had a sugar attack and lost her hair, which she said was common among Yorkshire terrier's. When researching I could find nothing of such occurences. Flaky skin and thinning hair are known to be caused by ringworm. Ringworm is also highly contagiuos, symptoms appear 4 to 10 days after contact. I believe that Mavis Jackson sold my puppy to me with knowledge of her condition. I have contacted Mavis Jackson on mutiple occasions to discuss these issues with her. Mavis Jackson told me that I could return my puppy on June 9th, 2006 and she would refund me for my purchase, however I was unwilling to do this. According to the 'Georiga Animal Protection Act' (Section 14-11-10), it is considered unlawful for a licensed breeder in the state of Georgia to: 'Fail to take reasonable care to release for sale, trade, or adoption only those animals which appear to be free of disease, injuries, and abnormalities.'
