AT&T Long Distance Fraud

Beware of long distance carriers and their charging policies. I am not a customer of AT&T but a nephew called me collect the other day from Las Cruces, NM. The call lasted not even 30 seconds. I should state that I am not a customer of AT&T, but when I got my phone bill (through Q-West, my local phone service carrier), I found out that AT&T had rounded up the call to a whole minute (of course!), and I was charged the outrageous amount of $6.70 for that one minute! I called their customer service to try to negotiate a more reasonable charge for that 'one minute'. They were most unreceptive and arrogant about it, indicating that I was reponsible for it and I had to pay for the charge. To me it wasn't a question of responsibility, of course I'm responsible and I know I will pay for it. The point I tried to make to the customer service guy (and his supervisor) was that $6.70 seemed a rather unreasonable amount to charge for a lousy 'one minute' worth of long distance calling. It seemed the more I tried to negotiate an agreement, the more closed off and arrogant they got. I finally hung up knowing I wasn't going to get any satisfaction from them. The message they left me with was one of clear, inequivocal greed. Here's a big multi-million dollar company, charging stratospheric fares for what should be basic service, not willing to negotiate or even reason with a customer on a complain for a lousy ONE worth of long distance calling. My question is why doesn't somebody regulate these people to keep them from committing these acts of legalized theft against unsuspecting customers. I hate to think what AT&T would have charged me if my nephew had called for 60 minutes or more. I would have had to morgage my house in order to pay them. So next time somebody calls you collect, be VERY weary, and unless it's a matter of extreme urgency, just say NO, especially if you're expecting a call from somebody. You can always call them right back using your own phone company carrier rather than using some unknown long distance carrier such as happened to me.
