A true teacher confession

This is my fifth year teaching. My students always do very well on standardized tests. The parents and students love me, and it's a private school, so their opinion is very important. My boss loves me. She never checks my plans - barely walks past my classroom even. So I quit doing plans a long time ago. The truth is, most of the time I am just "winging it". I walk in to the class about five minutes before the students, decide what I'm in the mood to teach that day, and go for it. Last week I spent an entire 90-minute class listening to Counting Crows songs with my students, and talking about the deeper meaning in the lyrics. Just because I heard one of their songs on the radio on my way to work, and I was feeling nostalgic. I thought maybe it'd catch up to me by now - like I'd screw up or test scores would fall or some parent would complain. But no. I just keep getting more compliments. I have six classes to teach tomorrow. Zero plans. Just going to walk in there and see what happens. Maybe we'll write poetry and share it? Maybe we'll act out scenes from a book? Who knows?

Join a teacher's union. That will give you iron clad protection. Short of molesting students, you can get away with anything and never be fired.

I probably should have pointed out that I am a guy. But I did mention this is a private school. Parents pay $12,000 per year for their children to go here. And these students almost always get into their first college of choice. My first alums are about to graduate college. I've kept up with them on Facebook, and they all already have excellent jobs lined up post-graduation. So whatever I and the rest of the teachers are doing, it seems to be working.
